So what’s the scoop on your new launch, Nourish Snacks?

I’ve spent the last two years sourcing ingredients from all around the globe to create these delicious, yummy, ubber-healthy concoctions. All thirty flavors are naturally gluten and dairy free with no GMO’s, no artificial anything and no harmful preservatives. They’re all under 200 calories, but packed with the right amount of protein, fiber and antioxidants to keep you feeling satisfied and fresh. Currently we’re selling everything e-commerce only. You can order a la carte, or join the “Snack Club.” If you join, every month you get a box filled with a delicious assortment of snacks. The first is a sampler – 20 of our favorites – then you go onto your online dashboard and rate them so that the next month will be personalized with your favorites. We always chuck in at least one of our newest flavors so you have something new to sample, too!

We have all sorts of different flavors, like the Cocoa Loco, with dark chocolate chia oat clusters, and the Cashew Colada, which pairs roasted California cashews with this insanely delicious dried pineapple from Sri Lanka. I get the farmers to pick it right before it ripens so that the fructose is actually lower, but it is so yummy and chewy that you would swear that there was added sugar!

You already have a busy career as a health expert and nutritionist. What was your motivation behind starting Nourish Snacks?

My whole mission is to help people make healthy choices in order to live fulfilling, smart and energetic lives. In my career, I’m always hearing problematic snack stories. We love to snack, often because we don’t have the time to make meals. I wanted to produce incredibly delicious but healthy snacks that were also super convenient at the same time.

What are some of the challenges that you’ve faced in creating this new company?

Money! [Laughs] In the beginning, trying to get ourselves off the ground with personal financing was tough. Then it was more of just the nuts and bolts. The packaging, the font size and the printing, and of course the importing. We source from around the globe, which means balancing the timing of the different ingredients coming in and juggling that with the seasons. I’m very OCD and anal about all of this stuff, and because I take quality so seriously, dealing with all the moving parts at the same time was the biggest challenge for me.

So what are some of your hopes and goals for Nourish Snacks?

I want to make delicious healthy snacks available to everybody, in all different varieties, in order to make healthy eating simple. Changing your lifestyle is hard, but no one should feel like they’re compromising on flavor because of their journey toward health. If you’re craving something salty and crunchy, we’ve got Mr. Popular. If you like spicy, we’ve got Holy Habanero or Pistachio OMG. If you like sweet we have the Cocoa Loco, or Mrs. Popular, which mixes half-popped kernels with 72 percent dark chocolate chips. So we have all of these really creative delicious blends that you’d never guess were so healthy!

For parents, introducing healthy foods can be very daunting. How do you recommend incorporating more healthy foods into their children’s diets?

By making it taste delicious! When my kids were little, I think one of the most successful ways for getting them to buy into healthy eating was to get them involved with it. During the week, each kid had their own day when they were responsible for making dinner with me. They would do the menu, go with me to the store and be involved with all the prep. I think having them connect with the food and be involved in how it gets prepared is so important to developing healthy habits.

Also, never give up on vegetables. You know that witching hour just before dinner when the kids are opening the pantries and looking for anything? I made it a rule that no one was allowed to eat during that time period except what was on the kitchen table, and I would always put out huge platters of vegetables. It’s amazing what your kids will eat when they’re starving and you eliminate the other options!

What are some healthy changes that parents can make today, this moment, to make themselves lead a healthier life?

Start your morning with a protein-rich breakfast. Protein in the morning helps to jump start your metabolism and regulate your appetite through the rest of the day. Another thing would be to make the television room a no-eating zone. I think we tend to mindlessly munch our way through thousands of calories when we’re engaged in a favorite television show or a movie.

Overall, I like to keep a 90:10 food philosophy. That means that if you go out of your way to eat healthy 90 percent of the time, it’s okay to give yourself some wiggle-room the other 10 percent!

Tell me a little about the Today Show. What has been your most memorable experience there?

I’ve been there 10 years, so lots of memorable experiences! Like the time I was holding a hot coffee and someone bumped into me in the green room and the entire coffee went all down my outfit and dress, all minutes before I had to go on the air! Everybody was blotting me, it was all over my hair, and all the makeup people trying to blow-dry my dress. I finally ran upstairs and Al looks at me as they’re reading out “TEN, NINE, EIGHT…” and says, “Joy, you have something all over the front of your dress!”

You’ve met and worked with so many people through the years. What do you think helps people lead a happy life?

That’s easy: having a positive attitude. I so strongly believe that we are in charge of our disposition, so having a can-do attitude sets the tone for your day, your year, your life! One of the most powerful things that people can do when they get up in the morning is just think of three things they’re grateful for, or three things that they’re proud of. That automatically puts you in a good mood! If you can religiously think of three things every single morning that give you a boost, it can be truly life-changing.
